Moss Rock Retreat offers writers a solitary, exclusive space to focus on creative work. The tiny house has everything you need for a solo retreat: a good desk, a cozy reading chair, a full kitchen, a writing table on the deck, inspirational nature walks, a curated writer’s library, and a restful night’s sleep.

Just 20 minutes from the city center of Portland, this writing retreat is close enough that you won’t lose time traveling, but far enough from town to give you the sense of “getting away”. Snug in your own private space, surrounded by an acre of greenery and garden, you’ll have enough peace and quiet to start – or finish! – your writing project.

Moss Rock Retreat is the passion project of two Portland writers, Virginia Bellis Brandabur and Matthew Brandabur. As writers/parents/day-jobbers, we dreamed of finding a nearby place where we might escape to write for a few days at a time, without spending hours on the road or the entire monthly daycare budget. (Such a place can be hard to find). After Virginia co-founded Lilla Lit, she also wanted to offer visiting writers a place to stay. We realized the space previously used to rehab a WWII Jeep was the exact right size for a 20-foot tiny writing retreat, and before long, Moss Rock Retreat was born. It’s still a little hard to believe we willed this tiny house writing retreat into being, but it’s here, waiting for you to come write!
